Improvements ...?

Beitrag von Melx »

Hello to all fellow Freewind owners !

So, without further ado, lets get to the questions :P !

I think most know how much FW likes to dive with standard front forks. Are progressive springs any solution ?
Stock windshield, it kinda blows, I mean directly in ya face. As I've read, most mra style solutions don't work either, at least for people 180 and taller, I'm ~185. Can anything be done in that regard ?
Braided brake line for front brake, how much improvement over spongy and soft stock lever ?

Thanks :!:

Hi,

Yes, progressive springs are a big improvement.

How gold is Spur german? Because there are some threads, where are the problems with the windshield are discussed. There have been many experiments of people of the same height as you. I am 184 and I am very happy with the windshield because the wind at the helmet has no turbulences, so I can life with the big wind pressure.

The braided brake line gives you a much clearer and stronger pressure point, but the xf will not get a two finger brake. If it is that what you want you have to chamge the break pads from organic to sintered.

I hope i could help you a little. You have to excuse my bad English, it has been a long time since I wrote something in this language...;-)

Hi there!

There are only two or three obvious must haves:

First a centre stand.
Second progressive springs.

I'd surely add the braided lines to the list, considering the assumed age of the old ones and the wear on the brake in general. Mind that, when the bike was still young, the brake actually was quite crisp and could easily lift the rear end when forced. Especially with stock springs.

Some people have MRA screens and are happy with them, but I (similiar height as you) went the other way round and sawed the top of the screen off. That doesn't increase pressure much, but decreases noise substantially. This solution depends much on if you like the looks and on your DIY abilities.

And finally I'd recommend good tires.

Well, springs and braided line will be added to the shopping list then. Those seem like best upgrades I can think of at this stage, should improve overall performance.
Could anything be gained from airbox mod ? I really haven't seen anyone modifying FW engine much at all. Are there any upgrades or mods ?
One plan I have been thinking quite some time is to mod exhaust end can, I've looked threads in this forum and those have given me an idea. Goal would be to improve sound but not increase noise(db) level... much.

Where are you based? If ouside of the EU: Go to www.drriders.com and have a look at what they do. DR 650 SE and XF share the same engine and exhaust. All mufflers and pipes for the DR will fit, some may need minor adjustments. In the EU your legal choices are reduced to a few E-numbered mufflers.

I have yet to see an airbox modification. Maybe try to remove the lid, but that'll increase noise substantially, and you will need to re-jet the carbs.
