New Member intro - happy owner of a 2000 XF650 Freewind

Hello Everybody,
Last week I bought a used (only 10,000 miles) UK spec 2000 XF650 Freewind. My other bike is a 2007 Yamaha FJR1300A.

This is the only forum I've found that caters to the the XF650, unfortunately even though my last name is German and my father's side has German roots way back in the family tree I can't speak a word of German. I hope some of you nice folks are not as limited and can speak some English.

I have been trying to figure out if the DR650 (DR650SE) front/riders pegs can be used on the XF650 as I'd like to have pegs that are more off-road oriented and offer better grip in the dirt/mud.

I'm also trying to figure out what other parts are interchangeable b/w the DR650 & the XF650, e.g. Oil filter, spark plugs, brakes, etc. and which year models.
Since the XF650 was only made for about 6 years the parts for it, or at least the listings I've found seem to be quite limited, where as the DR650x parts seem plentiful...

I need to find some crash bars, I've seen some nice ones in some of the Youtube videos, but can't find them online. I've found a center stand made by SW Motech. If there are any sites you can recommend that would be really great.

Hi. I bought a Freewind earlier this year in Australia with pretty much the same questions, some of which Ive found answers to.
Yes the DR650SE shares many components with the XF650, The entire engine is identical except the cylinder head, since the XF650 has bigger valves and 2 carburetors and the DR650 only having one carby so the Freewind has a slightly higher power output, but apart from that everything from clutches, oil filters, spark plugs gaskets etc, basically anything not on the head will be directly interchangeable engine wise.
Your correct SW motec does sell a really good center stand that is built very well in my opinion, its really easy to fit and takes about 30 minutes, having done it a couple of months ago.
As far as crash bars I have a set made by Hepco and Becker,http://www.polo-motorrad.de/en/sturzbug ... ewind.html they fitted easily and seem to be a quality product. These can be purchased online or in any good Bike shop. Another brand I can across but didnt get far with was ACCE brand in Columbia which seemed to make really good looking crash bars and pannier racks.
Hepco and Becker also make pannier racks which I installed this week.
I only speak english and I found google translator works very well to translate the entire site with makes navigating a lot easier http://translate.google.com/translate?j ... Findex.php
This is a pick on mine with the Hepco and becker pannier racks and crash bars, with the swmotoec center stand, oxford heated grips, DR650 hand guards. Taking a while but Im slowly getting mine to where i want it.
Asfar as the chassis, all I know is the rear disc is the same, but Im sure many other parts probably would fit aswell.

Re the crash bars, I was worried about smashing up the Tupperware if I dropped the XF out on some rocks... May I ask why you think they are a waste of time? This is my first DP type bike so maybe there is some wisdom I'm missing...

Steve thanks for the input, very helpful. I was able to figure out to switch the forum to Eng mode, but even though I know that most Europeans speak like 3 or 4 different languages (which I always find really impressive btw) I was worried that folks on here would not want to talk with Eng speakers. I'm really glad this board is not French, as the couple of times I'd visited France I often had that problem

Steve, any chance you could post up a pic of your H&B pannier racks fitted to the bike (couldn't see the pic you're referring to)? I've been considering ordering the Givi 3 piece rack so want to compare the look and feel...

Could you please post a link to the "ACCE brand in Columbia"? I think this must be the one I saw in a couple of the Youtube vids, it looks like it offers better protection for the upper Tupperware...

We had the discussion about the pegs ("Fußrasten") already. As I remember no one has found plug-and-play pegs, hence I think there aren't any. What people here have done is to buy universal ones or types for other models and weld them to the modified original.

What I said about the crash bars is my opinion if on-road riding is concerned. The whole bike is so narrow that no funtional parts ohter than handlebars, wheels and the tail (and the exhaust, unfotunately) may touch the ground. The fairing and other plastics may do that, yes. But my crashes all have shown me that the existing crash bars wouldn't have prevented much of the damage.
